Hockey families live an on the go lifestyle. From sun up to sun down, we have somewhere to be. With the school year quickly approaching, I went on a search for recipes for quick and healthy breakfasts for my kids.
That’s when I stumbled upon Hockey Mom, RD, Kim Lukhard.
She’s a registered dietitian, hockey mom, and author of the best-selling Amazon Hockey Book, Eat, Skate, Win: 7 Steps for Your Youth Hockey Star to Eat Like a Champions.
I reached out to Kim to ask her if she would provide me with some information so I could put together an infographic of the best quick and easy breakfasts to share with my readers. She was more than happy to work with me.
In addition to breaking down a delicious breakfast on the go, she taught me quite a bit about the importance of breakfast for student athletes.
- When student athletes miss breakfast, they are missing out on 20% of the calories they need to be successful in the classroom and on the ice.
- Breakfasts should be high in Vitamin D, Iron, and B Vitamins.
- Skipping breakfast has adverse side effects like exhaustion and decreased academic performance.

A good breakfast is everything. I make sure my kids always get a good start to their day with a healthy breakfast before they leave for school.
That’s great Robin. I do, too. My trouble is finding time in the mornings. It’s hectic.
Our county actually provides breakfast to all of the kids in schools – for free. (I feed my son before we leave for school, though.) I had not thought about the extra calories student athletes are missing out on!
Yeah, the need a bit more to keep going during the day!
My kiddos and I eat breakfast each and every day. We usually have a bowl of cereal each with some whole milk.
That’s a great choice. We never have time to sit down in the mornings. It’s rush, rush, rush!
